Ryan Young - All-Star

This season several players will be making their first All-Star appearance as they head to Charlotte, N.C. for the 2013 MLL All-Star Game presented by Moe’s Southwest Grill. Many of these first-timers are not new to the league, but they are just now finding their groove in Major League Lacrosse. They are posting impressive numbers that have earned them the opportunity to compete amongst the greatest lacrosse talent in the country.  Ryan Young, a third year player out of Maryland, is the prime example of a player that is just now settling into his role and has been rewarded with a trip to the All-Star Game.

In 2013, Ryan Young has been one of the leaders on a very youthful Charlotte Hounds team. Young, in his first season with the Hounds, has already posted 29 points.  That is already more points than he had earned in his MLL career prior to the 2013 season.  He has presented himself as a complete athlete this season, putting up seven assists and 22 goals, posing as an essential team player.

In each of his seven games, Young has recorded at least two points.  He posted a career best seven goals, and one assist for eight points in week three as Charlotte hosted the Rochester Rattlers and was responsible for seven of the Hounds' 10 points in the game. This is just one instance where Young has been so crucial to a team with such fresh talent. Heading into week ten Young holds the ten spot amongst point leaders in the league.

Young was a fourth round draft pick (23rd overall) by the Long Island Lizards in 2011.  He then spent two seasons with the team, playing in six games in 2011, and 12 in 2012.  As an attackman he recorded five goals and six points in his first season with the Lizards. Young’s production increased in 2012, posting 12 goals and 18 points. As he continues to improve season over season he has become a key player for the Charlotte Hounds after a trade in February of 2013.

As an attack at University of Maryland, Young boasted 163 college career points, 97 assists, and 110 ground balls. He also put together five hat tricks over his college career, 22 multi-goal games, and 48 multi-point games. In his senior year, 2011, he was named a USILA Third team All-American. On the academic side of things he graduated with a degree in criminal justice.

With four weeks left in the season and still with playoff hopes for the Hounds, Young has plenty of potential alongside teammate and captain, Matt Danowski. This could be just the beginning of Young’s scoring this season and he may be just now heading into the prime of his career. Already at 29 points, he is a difference-maker for the Hounds.

You can catch Young in Charlotte, playing on his home turf in the 2013 MLL All-Star Game presented by Moe’s Southwest Grill on Saturday, July 13.
